About NET/JRF Exam by UGC-NTA
The National Testing Agency (NTA) has been entrusted by the University Grants Commission
(UGC) with the task of conducting UGC-NET/JRF, which is a Test to determine the eligibility of Indian
nationals for ‘Assistant Professor’ as well as ‘Junior Research Fellowship and Assistant Professor’ in
Indian Universities and Colleges.
The UGC-NET/JRF exam is being conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) in Computer Based
Test (CBT) mode w.e.f. December 2018 onwards.
Awarding of Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) and/ or Eligibility for Assistant Professorship depends
on the aggregate performance of the candidate in Paper-I and Paper-II of UGC-NET. The candidates
qualifying only for Assistant Professorship are not eligible to be considered for the award of JRF.
Candidates who qualify the eligibility test for Assistant Professorship are governed by the rules and
regulations of the concerned Universities/Colleges/State Governments, as the case may be for
recruitment of Assistant Professor.
UGC-NET/JRF is conducted twice every year (June & December). Due to the outbreak of COVID- 19
pandemic in 2020 & 2021, the cycles of UGC NET were merged and conducted together.
In order to regularize the UGC-NET examination cycle, the National Testing Agency (NTA), with the
concurrence of UGC is conducting UGC NET December 2022 in the month of February & March 2023
in 83 subjects under disciplines like Humanities, Social Sciences, Management, Languages etc, at
selected cities across the country.
Pattern of Examination.
The test will consist of two papers. Both the papers will consist of objective
type, multiple choice questions. There will be no break between papers. The questions in Paper I (a
total of 50 MCQs for 100 Marks) intends to assess the teaching/ research aptitude of the candidate.
It will primarily be designed to test reasoning ability, reading comprehension, divergent thinking and
general awareness of the Candidate. Total duration of the test is 03 hours (180 minutes) without
any break. All the questions are compulsory. Paper II which contains 100 MCQs for 200 Marks is
based on the subject selected by the candidate and will assess domain knowledge. Updated Syllabus
for all NET Subjects can be downloaded from the UGC website.
National Testing Agency will not provide the copy of
syllabus to any candidate.
Eligibility Criteria for UGC-NET/JRF
Qualifying Examination:
(i) General/Unreserved/General-EWS candidates who have secured at least 55%
marks (without rounding off) in Master’s Degree or equivalent examination from
universities/institutions recognized by UGC (available on the website:
www.ugc.ac.in in Humanities and Social Science (including languages),
Computer Science and Applications, Electronic Science etc. are eligible for this
Test.
Other Backward Classes (OBC) belonging to Non-Creamy Layer/Scheduled Caste
(SC)/Scheduled Tribe (ST)/Persons with Disability (PwD)/Third gender category
candidates who have secured at least 50% marks (without rounding off) in Master’s
degree or equivalent examination are eligible for this Test.
(ii) Candidates who are pursuing their Master’s degree or equivalent course or
candidates who have appeared for their qualifying Master’s degree (final year)
examination and whose result is still awaited or candidates whose qualifying
examinations have been delayed may also apply for this test. However, such
candidates will be admitted provisionally and shall be considered eligible for award
of JRF/eligibility for Assistant Professor only after they have passed their Master’s
Degree or equivalent examination with at least 55% marks (50% marks in case of
OBC-NCL/ SC / ST / PwD / Third gender category candidates). Such candidates
must complete their Master’s degree or equivalent examination within two years
from the date of NET result with required percentage of marks, failing which they
shall be treated as disqualified.
(iii) Candidates belonging to the Third gender category are eligible to draw the same
relaxation in fee, age and Eligibility Criteria for NET (i.e., JRF and Assistant
Professor) as are available to SC/ST/PwD categories.
(iv) The Ph.D. degree holders whose Master’s level examination have been completed
by 19 September 1991 (irrespective of date of declaration of result) shall be eligible
for a relaxation of 5% in aggregate marks (i.e. from 55% to 50%) for appearing in
NET/JRF.
VI. (v) Candidates are advised to appear in the subject of their Post-Graduation only. The
candidates, whose Post Graduation subject is not covered in the list of NET
subjects, may appear in a related subject.
(vi) Candidates are neither required to send any certificates/documents in support of
their eligibility nor printout of their Application Form or Confirmation Page to NTA.
(vii) Candidates with post-graduate diploma/certificate awarded by Indian University/
Institute or foreign degree/diploma/certificate awarded by the foreign University/
institute should in their own interest, ascertain the equivalence of their
diploma/degree/ certificate with Master’s degree of recognized Indian universities
from Association of Indian Universities (AIU), New Delhi (www.aiu.ac.in).
How to crack the UGC-NTA NET/JRF Test?
Since the combined score in Paper I and II is the determining factor, candidates are expected to have
an ambivalent attitude. At the same time, as Paper II carries greater weight in terms of questions
and marks there should be a proportionate division of learning time between the 2 Papers.
Paper I has 10 modules and there are 5 questions from each module. Candidates are advised to
devote more time and attention to those modules which they find harder.
Regarding Paper II, candidate’s depth and breadth of knowledge in the chosen subject is paramount.
